Hand drawn mock ups

Here are my hand drawn mock ups for each page of my magazine;

These are only a rough guide as to how I will design the layout of my magazine, but will also help me get started with designing my final pages for my magazine.

Equipment/Technologies

Below is a list of the equipment I will be using:
Photoshop
Digital Camera
Macbook computers
Lighting for the photo shoot
Internet
Blog
In Design

All the above will help me to create my magazine.

Plan for Photoshoot

The name of my magazine is 'Musique'. I am creating my own girl band who are called 'Volume' which are based on a pop genre. I will be taking the photos for the photo shoot myself using a digital camera, and editing them on photoshop if needed. I will be using the colour scheme purple and white throughout my magazine, and I will be using fonts from the website dafont.com.

I have chosen 5 of my friends to do my photo shoot, of which I will be basing their image using inspiration from the girls group 'The Saturdays'. They will be all wearing similar outfits, consisting of black leggings, a black blazer, heels, but will all have a different brightly coloured top on in order to emphasise the fact that they are a group. I have chosen primary colours such as yellow, pink, purple and yellow in order to make the photo stand out from the contrast to the other black clothing. I will be using the white background for the background to my photos, in order to make my group stand out and be seen clearer. I will be using the lighting to make the photos soft and bright, this is called 'High key lighting'. The lighting creates a soft and peaceful mood which is perfect for promoting my girl band as a girly pop group. I don't think I will be using any props in the shoot, as I think that having five of them in a group will already make the photo quite full.

Here are some examples as to how I want my photo shoot to look like;

The girls are all wearing different bright coloured skirts and dresses, with the same coloured vest. They are stood behind a bright plane background, and the lighting is bright and soft.

The photoshoot will be taking place on Friday the 17th of December at quarter to eleven in the media studio.

Teacher Comments

There is some excellent work here so far with lots of detail and media language. There is a clear sense of target audience and how you intend to appeal to them.

There are a few posts where you have pasted information onto your blog but not discussed or analysed it. You can only get marks for how you use and analyse information. So you must always show why you have put it on your blog and what it means to your project.

We are now half way and only ten days till half term. So ten days left you take all your images and begin to create your pages.

Good luck!

Moodboards

Here is a moodboard I created using photoshop. This moodboard is mainly focussing on photos and images linked to music and fashion. I have done this so that I can put all my thoughts and inspiration down together and develop a clearer understanding of what I need to include in my magazine.  I included existing magazine front covers, photos of celebrities and music artists from the genre of pop. I also included typical things that are related to music and fashion. This is all in order of finding images that are suitable for my magazine and a way of analysing photos that will be popular for my target age range.

Here is another mood board I have created using photoshop. I have made this mood board in order to get an idea of what fonts are available on photoshop and the website www.dafont.com. I have picked a variety of fonts; some that are plain, some that are curly, bold, eye catching and like magazine cut outs. The font that grabs my attention is the 'California' font.

Here is my final mood board, which I have picked the fonts that I like best, then changed the font into different colours. I decided that I want to use the colour scheme purple and white, therefore I used a white background and changed the font to different colours of purple to see which colour I liked best. Out of all these, my favourite colour is the one I used for the font 'California' as it is an eye catching colour of purple, it isn't too dark or too light, and it makes the font stand out on the white background.

Magazine Titles

I have come up with some names for the title of my magazine, as it is important to have a bold eye catching name for a magazine.  I am creating a mix of a fashion and music magazine, so I need to create a title that links the two together.

Firstly I made a list of all thinks that relate to fashion:
Topshop
Heels
Dresses
Boutique
Glamour
Fashion

Then I made a list of all the things that relate to music:
Beats
Dance
Music
Decks
Base

Then I put the two lists together in order to create a name to link the two topics together. Here are some ideas I got, which I put into a questionnaire and asked 10 people to tell me which name was the most popular and appropriate.

Questionnaire
Which out of these names for a music/fashion magazine do you think would be the most appropriate?

Fashion Beats            1

Base Shop                 0

Musique                    9

Glamour Base           0

From my questionnaire I found that the name 'Musique' was the most popular, therefore I will be naming my magazine this.

Circulation Figures

I have researched the circulation figures for the magazines I have got inspiration from. I used the website pressgazette.co.uk to get my research from in order to find circulation figures to prove demand in the market for my magazine.

The website states that the music magazine 'NME' had an average weekly circulation of over 33875 copies during six months. Another music magazine close to 'NME' was 'Uncut' which sold 74067 copies. And 'Kerrang' sold 44013 copies, an increase of 1.8 %

The website also stated that the fashion magazine 'Glamour' sold an average of over 526216 copies during a six month period. The 'Look' magazine sold 313358 copies and the 'More' magazine sold 187159 copies.

Therefore this proves that magazines are very popular; both music and fashion magazines. So my magazine will fit into the market perfectly.

Magazine Institution

I have researched a magazine institution to produce and distribute my magazine, as it is important to find a company to sell and distribute my magazine. I have researched IPC, which is a media company that produces over 85 media brand that reach the needs of two thirds of women and 44% of men.
The focus on men is based on magazines such as 'NME' and the focus on women is based on magazines like 'LOOK' which is similar to the "More' magazine I am concentrating on.

Here is 'LOOK' and 'NME' magazine which IPC distribute. The 'Look' magazine is a typical fashion magazine and covers all the aspects I am including in my fashion side of my magazine and the 'NME' magazine is a typical music magazine which covers all the aspects I a m including in my music side of my magazine. Therefore IPC is a perfect company to produce and distribute my magazine as I am creating a magazine similar to those that they all ready distribute, and I am focussing on both genders.

Band analysis

I have researched girl pop groups that are popular at the moment to get information on how my own girl group should be represented. Both groups are popular at the moment with the young age market, and are both related to fashion. Which is exactly what I want my girl band to be represented as.

I love this photo of 'The Saturdays' because the bench makes the photo look casual compared to the usual standing up pose. All the girls are wearing the same shoes- to show that they are connected together in a group. I like the thought of the girls in my girl band all having something the same on. Also,  as you can see, there are five people in this band. I think it works well as there aren't too many people or too less which will make the photo look bare. I will keep that in mind when creating my own band.

Here is another photo of 'The Saturdays', only this time they are all wearing black. This is effective because it makes sure that no one stands out from the rest- therefore making them all equal. I will include the black outfits in mind when taking my photos. Also, the black outfits makes the band look sophisticated and not tacky.

Here is another example of a girl band. 'Girls Aloud' have used the idea of each member wearing a block  coloured outfit. This works well as it attracts your attention immediately due to the bright colours. I like this idea, therefore I will keep that in mind when choosing what my band will wear in the photo shoot.

Questionnaire

I have made a questionnaire for people to answer in order to find out the information that I need. Such as, whether or not the choices I have made will appeal positively to the audience? I can also find out what ideas the audience have, therefore I can include these ideas within my magazine, making more people buy it as it reaches the audiences needs. Below is a copy of my questionnaire with the results.

No               0

From my questionnaire
I asked an equal amount of males and females to make my questionnaire reliable, this is because I am wanting to aim my magazine to suit both genders. I asked all ages between 16 and 25 as this is what my magazine is mostly aimed at, therefore this will give me a clear indication of what my target market want in a magazine. The people I asked tended to buy magazines the most once a week, compared to only 3 people bought magazines once a fortnight, and 0 people bought a magazine once a month. This clearly proves that I will aim my magazine to be marketed once a week. However 1 person did say that they hardly ever buy magazines, I can still use this for my evidence because even though they don't buy magazines that often, I can use their answers to develop a magazine that will make them want to buy magazine more often. The majority of people preferred to buy a magazine at the price of £1- £1.50, therefore I will price my magazine at this price. The most popular genre of music was pop, therefore choosing a pop group to base my magazine on has proven a good choice. Also, people tended to buy magazines for the interview, which is good as that is what I am focussing on in my magazine, however it was an equal vote for buying a magazine for  the artist/band, gossip and celebrities. I am including all these in my magazine. Finally, my main question was whether or not the public would be interested in a music/fashion magazine. Everyone said yes, therefore my mixed hybridity magazine has proven to be a good idea.

More Research

UK Top 40 Research
I have researched the Uk top 40 in order to see which genre is most popular at the moment, so that I know if I have chosen the right genre for my magazine or not. I have picked Radio One's top 40 as Radio One is the number one radio station listened to, therefore will be reliable.
As seen from the chart below, at number one is boy band called JLS, who are from the pop genre. Also a few other artist in the chart are from the genre of pop such as Katy Perry, Westlife, Ellie Goulding and Rihanna.
This then proves that choosing the genre of pop will be successful because it clearly appeals to the pubic seeing as the number one at the moment is a pop group.
